The history of Linux actually dates back to 1991 when Linus Torvalds, a Finnish student at the University of Helsinki, began working on this project. Torvalds wanted to create an open-source alternative to minix (a Unix-like computer operating system). He began working on this project with help from other developers, who were also interested in creating an alternative to minix. The first version of Linux was released in October 1992.


In 1995, Torvalds announced that he would no longer be working on Linux full time due to his new job as a computer science graduate student at University of Helsinki. However, he continued to contribute as much time as possible. In 1998 Torvalds became an employee of Transmeta Corporation where he worked until 2003 before leaving to focus on his family life and continue work on Linux again full time starting with version 2.6
